Kim Min-jae, the Napoli centre-back, is being considered by Newcastle as they look to strengthen their defence ahead of the upcoming season. Manchester United are also interested in the South Korean player, who has a release clause of £42million that will become active on July 1. While United are currently the favourites to sign him, Newcastle are keeping a close eye on the situation. Kim’s representatives have reportedly held talks with Newcastle officials at St James’ Park during one of their last home games of the season. Eddie Howe, the Magpies boss, is searching for a new central defender to compete alongside Fabian Schar and Sven Botman in the Champions League next season. Jamaal Lascelles, who is not part of Howe’s long-term plans, could be sold this summer as he enters the final year of his deal. Kim, who was dubbed ‘The Monster’, recently won the Serie A title with Napoli and was named the league’s best defender. He is expected to decide on his future next month after completing military service back home. The 26-year-old is keen on a move to the Premier League after just one season in Italy following his signing from Fenerbache last summer. Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag sees Kim as someone who can provide competition for Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. Kim had a successful campaign with Napoli this season, scoring two goals and providing two assists in 45 appearances across all competitions.
