Newcastle manager Eddie Howe ‘has got the whole arsenal’ as Kieron Dyer reveals Jonathan Woodgate was ‘blown away’ by ‘tactical mastermind’

Kieron Dyer has described Eddie Howe as ‘a tactical mastermind’ after recalling Jonathan Woodgate’s experience of watching Newcastle training.

The Magpies are looking like a real force to be reckoned with this term with the Tynesiders sitting third in the Premier League and into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup following their victory over Leicester.

Dyer was a Newcastle player last time they reached a domestic cup semi-final back in 2005 and spoke to Laura Woods and Ally McCoist at just how impressed he’s been with Howe’s role in their recent rise.

Speaking on The Sports Breakfast, Dyer said: “I’ve just come back from a Pro Licence course and we did a module and it was a two-day thing and Jonathan Woodgate was on our course.

“Before Jonathan Woodgate got the Middlesbrough job with Michael Carrick he went to watch Newcastle train and he was shocked at how tactically aware Eddie was.

“I know they’re all about intensity and playing on the front foot but his actual tactics and knowing how to create overloads, it blew Jonathan Woodgate away, to be honest.

“Woodgate was like, ‘honestly, Eddie Howe has got the whole arsenal’ and that surprised me in a way, as well.

“I think I’m doing him a disservice when I say they play on the front foot because there will be times when they play the big teams and he’ll come up with a tactical plan.

“He showed that against Man City at St James’ Park, I think they lost to Liverpool in the last minute and he even went with a pragmatic approach against Arsenal as well.

“He’s a tactical mastermind, so fair play to him.”
