Netherlands’ Euro 2020 campaign took an unexpected turn on Tuesday night as they suffered a 3-2 loss to Austria. Despite Cody Gakpo netting his second goal of the tournament, captain Virgil van Dijk was left furious with the team’s performance.
Heading into the tournament, the Netherlands were seen as potential contenders for the title, boasting a strong squad under Ronald Koeman. However, their journey through the group stage has been far from smooth. They managed a narrow 2-1 victory over Poland but then played out a goalless draw against France, settling for a point.
The match against Austria was crucial for the Oranje’s progression in Group D. With four points already in their tally, they were in a favorable position but still needed a positive result or other favorable outcomes to secure a spot in the last 16.
Unfortunately, their encounter with Ralf Rangnick’s Austria got off to a rocky start. Donyell Malen inadvertently diverted Alexander Prass’ cross into his own goal, giving Austria an early advantage. The first half belonged to Austria, but the Netherlands improved their performance after halftime, largely thanks to the introduction of Xavi Simons.
It was Simons’ impressive run that led to the equalizer. He drove forward and found Gakpo, who skillfully cut onto his right foot and bent the ball into the net. This goal marked Gakpo’s second of the tournament and showcased his effectiveness on the left flank.
However, Austria didn’t let the setback discourage them. Romano Schmid headed in a goal to put Austria back in front. Nevertheless, Memphis Depay quickly responded with an improvised effort, converting Wout Weghorst’s header from Gakpo’s cross to bring the Netherlands level once again.
In the end, it was Marcel Sabitzer who secured the victory for Austria with a well-placed finish into the top corner. Van Dijk’s defensive performance was questionable throughout the game, and he was particularly at fault for playing Sabitzer onside during the winning goal.
Van Dijk’s frustration was evident as he swiftly left the field after the final whistle. In an interview with NOS, he emphasized the need for change if the Netherlands are to have any chance of success in the tournament. He admitted that it was a poor match for the team and that everyone is responsible for the disappointing result. Van Dijk’s message was clear: if they want to achieve something in the Euros, they must make quick improvements.
Despite finishing third in their group, the Netherlands have secured a spot in the last 16. They are now set to face England in what promises to be an exciting showdown on Sunday.
