Nani has once again asked his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Manchester United and feels his old club will be ‘much stronger’ this term.

Ronaldo’s relationship with Erik ten Hag has hit rock bottom, with the 37-year-old said to be ‘furious’ with the new United manager.

Ronaldo informed United of his desire to leave earlier in the summer as he is desperate to play in the Champions League.

On Wednesday, Ten Hag said it was ‘unacceptable’ that several players – including five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo – left Sunday’s friendly against Rayo Vallecano early.

Ronaldo made his first pre-season appearance against the Spanish side but was pictured leaving Old Trafford before the final whistle after being subbed off at half-time.

Offers from rival clubs have not been forthcoming but Ronaldo looks set to renew his efforts to leave the club following Ten Hag’s criticism.

It has already been claimed that Ten Hag has decided to bench Ronaldo for United’s Premier League opener against Brighton on Saturday.

However, Nani feels that Ronaldo should put all that behind him and stay at United for another year at least.

‘I would like to see him in Manchester for one more year,’ Nani told ESPN FC. ‘Why not? The team has been doing great in pre-season.

‘They have been preparing well. They will be much stronger this season, so let’s see [about Cristiano Ronaldo].’

Nani won four Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time at United, where he played alongside Ronaldo, and it is not the first time this summer he has called for the Portugal star to stay at the club.

‘I hope [he stays],’ Nani said in July. ‘He’s an important player and a player who always makes a difference.

‘I hope he’s in a good mood to help the club so hopefully [he’ll stay].’

United’s season gets started this weekend as they look to build on last season’s sixth-place finish.
