The first French club Liverpool faced off against was FC Metz in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup. The Reds won the first leg at Anfield 3-0, but were held to a 1-1 draw in the second leg in France.
The following season, Liverpool faced off against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. The Reds won the first leg at Anfield 1-0, but were held to a 1-1 draw in the second leg in France.
In the 2003/04 Champions League, Liverpool faced off against Monaco. The Reds won the first leg at Anfield 2-0, but were held to a 0-0 draw in the second leg in France.
In the 2005/06 Champions League, Liverpool faced off against Lille. The Reds won the first leg at Anfield 2-0, but were held to a 0-0 draw in the second leg in France.

In the 2012/13 Europa League, Liverpool faced off against Stade de Reims. The Reds won the first leg at Anfield 2-1, but were held to a 0-0 draw in the second leg in France.
In the 2014/15 Europa League, Liverpool faced off against Lille. The Reds won the first leg at Anfield 2-0, but were held to a 0-0 draw in the second leg in France.

The Reds’ European adventures look a little different this season after six consecutive campaigns in the Champions League, but it’s the result of their lacklustre 2022/23 season. Nevertheless, the competition has already proved handy for rotation and minutes for youngsters and fringe players, positives that will not be lost on Jurgen Klopp.
In Group E, Liverpool are joined by Austrian, Belgian and French opposition, and it is the latter that we want to delve into a little deeper. With their opponents now known, it will be interesting to see how Klopp and his side fare against these French clubs this season!
