Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has issued a warning to Mykhailo Mudryk following his struggles at Chelsea since his big-money move from Shakhtar Donetsk in January. The Ukraine international has yet to score in 17 appearances in all competitions and Johnson believes he will not be given much more time to prove his worth, especially with Mauricio Pochettino taking over next month.
Johnson told Betfred: ‘Overall, I’ve been unimpressed. However, sometimes it takes certain players more time to adapt than others. I still believe that Mykhailo has a lot to give and he looks like he’s going to threaten a lot, but he just doesn’t do a lot. Once he gets used to the Premier League and what the team needs him to do, then he’s certainly got the attributes to be very dangerous. I don’t believe he will be given much more time to impress at Chelsea, so he needs to hit the ground running when the new season begins in August.’
Mudryk was not the only Chelsea player to struggle last season as the Blues slumped to a 12th-place finish in the Premier League. Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter were both sacked by Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly and the Blues have turned to former Paris Saint-Germain, Tottenham and Southampton boss Pochettino to turn the club’s fortunes around.
