TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is set to make his season debut on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons if his recovery continues to progress smoothly, according to coach Jonathan Gannon.
Preparing for the Return
Murray, who suffered a torn right ACL in Week 14 of the 2022 season during a “Monday Night Football” game against the New England Patriots, has been taking all the reps with the first-team offense and is gradually increasing his workload in practice.
Gannon expressed his satisfaction with Murray’s progress, stating, “Pleased where he is at right now. We’ll see how the week goes.”
Activation and Contingency Plan
The plan is to activate Murray on Wednesday, which is the final day of his window to be promoted to the 53-man roster after being on the physically unable to perform list. However, if Murray is unable to play on Sunday, rookie Clayton Tune will make his second consecutive start.
Gannon emphasized that Murray’s return involves two crucial steps – practicing with the first team and then playing in a live game. He cautioned that Murray may not immediately regain his pre-injury form but expressed confidence in his ability to contribute to the team’s success.
Health Concerns and Leadership Role
Gannon stated that the overall health of the Cardinals’ roster will not affect Murray’s availability. Despite injuries to key players such as starting offensive linemen, tight end Zach Ertz, and wide receiver Michael Wilson, the team remains optimistic about Murray’s return.
Gannon praised Murray’s dedication and leadership, noting that he has been a positive influence on the team during his recovery. Murray returned to practice on October 18 and gradually increased his involvement with the offense, culminating in his anticipated return this week.
“He’s excited to get back in the huddle and assume a little bit of that leadership role being in the huddle as well,” Gannon said.
As Murray continues to ramp up his preparation, the Cardinals are hopeful that his return will provide a much-needed boost to the team’s performance.
