Liverpool have agreed to sell attacking midfielder Takumi Minamino to Monaco for an initial fee of €15million (£12.9m).

The 27-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Ligue 1 side and the deal will be completed once the player has passed his medical.

Minamino was reportedly the subject of much interest with Wolves, Fulham and Serie A side Atalanta making enquiries into the Japanese international.

But it seems that Monaco have won the race for the player who has struggled to hold down a spot in Jurgen Klopp’s first team.

Minamino moved to Anfield in January 2019 in a £7m transfer from Red Bull Salzburg but never looked capable of surpassing the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

A decent, half-season loan spell at Southampton suggested that he could yet prove his worth at the highest level, but it was not to be with the player starting just one Premier League game last season, although he did play a key role in the club’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup triumphs.

The recent signings of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have pushed Minamino even further down the pecking order and his time at Liverpool is set to end after 14 goals in 55 games in all competitions.

He will become the third major Liverpool forward to leave the club this summer following the release of Divock Origi and Mane’s much mooted move to Bayern Munich.

However, the money raised from their sale is not likely to be spent this summer, as the Reds’ transfer business has already concluded according to some reports, following the signings of Nunez from Benfica, Fabio Carvalho from Fulham and Cavin Ramsay from Aberdeen.

Klopp would like to add another midfielder to his roster but is content to wait until next summer to do so when more funds should be available, with young Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham top of the shortlist.
