Mohamed Salah equals Thierry Henry record as Liverpool beat LASK in Europa League opener
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah equalled a record held by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry on Thursday night, as the Reds opened their Europa League campaign with a 3-1 win over LASK in Austria.
Salah was not in the starting XI for the Reds, but he came off the bench and scored the final goal of the game, his 42nd major European competition goal for the club.
That tally is the same number of goals that Henry scored for the Gunners in major European competition, and with Thursday night the first match of a Europa League campaign for Liverpool, it is surely only a matter of days or weeks until Salah moves ahead of the legendary Frenchman on that score.
Jurgen Klopp Makes History
There was also a piece of history for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on Thursday night, as he became the first manager in the club’s history to record 50 wins in European competition.
‘Let me say it like this, if I have still 50 after the group stage then I’m still the most successful Liverpool manager [in this regard] and everybody will hate the fact!’ Klopp said.
‘[It’s] nice. We played quite a lot of games in Europe. It’s good that we won that many, we qualified frequently for finals so of course we should have won games. It’s great but probably it’s because in European competition there are just much more games than in the past. I’m pretty sure that’s it.’
Brighton Stumble on Europa League Debut
Elsewhere on Thursday night, Brighton stumbled on their Europa League debut, losing 2-1 to Cypriot side Apollon Limassol. West Ham United were also in action, beating NK Osijek 1-0 in Croatia.
