Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has praised Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong as “the best Dutch player” in a recent interview. Manchester United had reportedly been interested in signing De Jong, but he has since stated that he is happy and settled in Catalonia. Despite this, United boss Erik ten Hag is still keen to recruit a new playmaker, and De Jong remains high on their wish list. Modric described De Jong as “a top player” and “one of the players I like to watch,” adding that he “has something special.”
The Dutchman has been a key player for Barcelona since joining from Ajax in 2019, and has helped the club win two Copa del Rey titles and the La Liga title in the 2020-21 season. He has also been a regular for the Netherlands national team, earning 36 caps since his debut in 2018.
Former United coach Rene Meulensteen has urged Ten Hag to bring in De Jong, saying that he would “100 per cent do everything to get De Jong.” Meulensteen praised the player’s energy, tactical ability, and build-up play, and suggested that he would have already joined United if he had not been happy at Barcelona. However, he acknowledged that De Jong is content at the Catalan club and is unlikely to leave.
Despite this, United are still searching for a new midfielder to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. Tottenham have reportedly registered interest in signing United star Jesse Lingard, which could free up funds for the Red Devils to pursue other targets.
