Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has sympathised with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale after the Englishman revealed he is suffering from being dropped from the starting lineup.

Ramsdale was demoted to the bench against Everton earlier this month and has made only one appearance since then, against Brentford in the Carabao Cup, with David Raya starting four consecutive Premier League games and both of Arsenal’s matches in Europe so far this season.

Having been axed, Ramsdale is now concerned that his place in England’s plans ahead of next summer’s European Championships is in jeopardy having been a regular in Southgate’s squad.

Speaking after Tuesday night’s win over Italy, Ramsdale said: ‘There’s days where I come in and I’m down because of the situation and he (David Raya) picks me up and for whatever reason there might be a day where he’s down and even though I’m suffering and hurting for not playing I have to stand up and be able to push him.

‘For me I need to get back into my club team to keep getting picked (for England) and keep giving the manager a headache because if I’m not, then that’s an easier decision for him.’

‘It is (a worry), it is the first time I have found myself in this situation. The (England) manager is brilliant, he trusts the players he’s worked with before as we’ve seen in different types of ways.’

Arteta’s Advice To Ramsdale

Despite Ramsdale’s concerns, he is almost certain to be on the bench tomorrow as Arsenal look to win what would be an unprecedented fourth game in a row at Stamford Bridge and Arteta insists his former No.1 must find other ways to contribute to the success of the team while he is not in the side.

‘It is not easy for any player when he is not playing as much as he would like to,’ Arteta said at his pre-match press confeence.

‘The only way to do it is to work harder to show the passion he has for the game and to contribute to the team in a different way. And when you get the opportunity do your best and help the team to win the game.’
