Mikel Arteta Praises Aaron Ramsdale’s Reaction to Being Dropped by Arsenal
Mikel Arteta has praised Aaron Ramsdale’s reaction to being dropped from Arsenal’s starting line-up in favour of summer signing David Raya. The England international had done little wrong in the opening four games of the season, but was left on the substitutes’ bench for the club’s 1-0 win over Everton and 4-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s north London derby against Spurs, Arteta said he was pleased with Ramsdale’s attitude in light of a decision he took no enjoyment from making.
Ramsdale’s Attitude Has Been ‘Really Good’
“He’s been very supportive, he’s been really good around the place and that’s what I expect from every single player, because when you are on the field there is someone else who is not,” said Arteta. “So it goes both ways and so far he’s been really really good.”
The Spaniard went on to explain that while he may look comfortable with his decision, it is one of the hardest things for a manager to do. “You want them to feel loved and trusted, and the way to do that is to play them, but everybody understands it’s a team sport.”
Raya Has Kept Two Clean Sheets Since Replacing Ramsdale
Raya, who joined Arsenal from Brentford this summer, has kept two clean sheets since replacing Ramsdale in goal. Arteta insists he is yet to make a decision on who will start against Spurs on Sunday, but says he expects everyone to understand that it is a team sport and that changes will be made throughout the season.
The Arsenal boss also believes that everyone will have a role to play in the season ahead, and that those who have started the first six or seven games of the season should not be looked back on.
