Middlesbrough Women’s Football Club has merged with Middlesbrough FC in a move that will boost women’s football on Teesside. The women’s team had previously operated as a separate entity to the men’s club, leaving them strapped for cash and support as they struggled in the lower reaches of the English pyramid. The merger means that the women’s team will now be able to train at Rockliffe Park and play at the Riverside Stadium. The club has also appointed Mick Mulhern as its new head coach. The affiliation between the two clubs may not have happened if it wasn’t for the stunning rise in stature of the women’s game, thanks in part to the Lionesses’ huge success in the Euros in 2022.
