Former Vanderbilt Head Coach Derek Mason Set to Lead Middle Tennessee
According to a team source at Middle Tennessee, former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason is expected to take over as the next coach for the Blue Raiders, as reported by The Athletic.
A Proven Track Record
Derek Mason, 53, served as the head coach for the Commodores from 2014 to 2020, accumulating a record of 27-55. Despite the challenges faced during his tenure, Mason brings valuable experience and expertise to his new role at Middle Tennessee.
After parting ways with Vanderbilt, Mason spent two seasons as a defensive coordinator. In 2021, he joined Auburn University, followed by a stint at Oklahoma State in the previous year. Most recently, Mason worked as a TV analyst for the SEC Network throughout the current season.
Consideration for Other Candidates
Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks was also strongly considered for the coaching vacancy at Middle Tennessee, according to Chris Vannini of The Athletic.
A Change in Leadership
Derek Mason will be stepping in to replace Rick Stockstill, who was relieved of his duties after serving as the head coach for Middle Tennessee for 18 seasons.
