Michael Owen Urges Harry Kane to Stay at Tottenham Hotspur Despite Bayern Munich Bid
The ball is in Harry Kane’s court after Bayern Munich agreed a fee with Tottenham Hotspur for his signature this week. With the clubs having agreed a price, the England captain must now decide whether or not he wants to move to the Bundesliga giants. Michael Owen believes that Kane should stay at Spurs and not make the move to Bayern Munich.
Kane wanted his future decided by Friday night, with Tottenham’s Premier League campaign getting underway at Brentford on Sunday. Therefore a decision is expected to be made pretty quickly, with Bayern in action in the Super Cup on Saturday against RB Leipzig and getting their Bundesliga campaign started at Werder Bremen on 18 August.
Owen admitted that there were clubs Kane should leave Tottenham for – including his own former club Real Madrid – but Bayern is not one of them. ‘I know Bayern Munich are a massive club and I have huge respect for them but if I were Harry Kane I’d stay put,’ Owen tweeted. ‘There’s no great achievement in winning a trophy with them. Real Madrid I would understand. Or one or two top Premier League clubs for that matter. Becoming the all time Premier League top goal scorer at Tottenham is a bigger achievement than winning the league in a country dominated by one team.’
Kane has been one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League since he broke into the Tottenham first team in 2014. He has scored 181 goals in 278 appearances for Spurs and is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. He has also won two Premier League Golden Boot awards and was named PFA Player of the Year in 2016.
Tottenham have been unable to win any silverware since Kane joined the club, but they have come close on several occasions, most notably in 2019 when they lost to Liverpool in the Champions League final.
Kane may be tempted by the prospect of winning trophies with Bayern Munich, but Owen believes that staying at Spurs would be a better move for him. Winning trophies with Bayern is no great achievement, according to Owen, as they are one of the most successful clubs in Europe.
Kane may also be tempted by the prospect of playing alongside some of the world’s best players at Bayern, but Owen believes that he should stay at Spurs and become their all-time leading goalscorer.
