Paris St-Germain have won a record 11th Ligue 1 title after drawing with Strasbourg, with Lionel Messi scoring the decisive goal. Messi’s 32nd goal for PSG was a fine finish from Kylian Mbappe’s pass and could be his last as he is set to leave at the end of the season. Kevin Gameiro bundled in an equaliser for Strasbourg but PSG only needed a point to hold off Lens with one game to go. The celebrations were muted as PSG’s goal difference meant they had the title almost secure last week. The final minutes were played at a slow pace with both sides happy with a point, as Strasbourg are now safe from relegation.
Christophe Galtier’s future remains uncertain despite helping PSG win their ninth title in 11 years. He took charge at the start of the season, having led Lille to the 2020-21 title, but their Champions League last-16 exit to Bayern Munich was a major blow. PSG have now moved past Marseille’s previous record of 10 French titles, three of which came before their rivals were formed in 1970.
Messi’s goal in the title-sealing game ensures his time at PSG will end more positively than expected at the start of May. He had been suspended for two weeks after travelling to Saudi Arabia without PSG’s permission and the club had stepped up security at his home after fans chanted against him. Many did not expect him to play for PSG again after that ban ended, but his goal has sealed their record-breaking title win.
