Max Verstappen to Receive Grid Penalty for Belgian Grand Prix
Formula One championship leader Max Verstappen will face a five-place grid penalty for the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix. The penalty comes as a result of a gearbox change on his Red Bull Racing car. Verstappen had already used up his allocation of four gearboxes for the season, and any additional gearbox changes result in a five-place grid drop.
Verstappen’s need for a new gearbox stems from a failure during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix back in March. This setback put him out of sync with his planned season usage and made it inevitable that he would exceed the yearly limit. However, Spa-Francorchamps, the venue for the Belgian Grand Prix, is known for its overtaking opportunities, making it a favorable track for Verstappen to take a grid drop.
Last year, Verstappen started the Belgian Grand Prix from 14th place on the grid due to a power unit penalty. However, he managed to showcase his exceptional overtaking skills and worked his way into the lead after just 12 laps. Ultimately, Verstappen won the race by a commanding 17-second margin. This history suggests that even with the grid penalty, Verstappen remains the heavy favorite for victory at Spa.
If Verstappen secures pole position in qualifying on Friday, he will start Sunday’s grand prix from sixth place on the grid. While the penalty will impact his starting position for the main race, it will not affect his starting position for Saturday’s sprint race. The starting order for the sprint race is determined by the result of the sprint shootout qualifying session held earlier in the day.
Verstappen enters the Belgian Grand Prix weekend with a significant lead in the drivers’ championship, boasting a 110-point advantage over his Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez. He has also won the last seven races, putting him just two victories away from tying the all-time record for consecutive wins. Additionally, Verstappen’s win in Hungary last Sunday marked a new F1 team record, with Red Bull securing their 12th consecutive victory.
When asked about his winning streak, Verstappen expressed his focus on each race and his enjoyment of the moment. He acknowledged the incredible achievement of the entire team and emphasized the difficulty of maintaining such dominance without making mistakes. Verstappen also highlighted the challenges faced by other dominant teams in the past, including Mercedes, who struggled with reliability issues.
As the Belgian Grand Prix approaches, all eyes will be on Verstappen as he aims to extend his winning streak and solidify his position at the top of the championship standings. With his exceptional driving skills and the support of his team, Verstappen remains a force to be reckoned with on the Formula One circuit.
