Chelsea captain Reece James still struggling to regain full fitness

Chelsea captain Reece James will not be in the starting XI when the Blues host Brentford on Saturday as he continues his battle to regain full fitness.

The 23-year-old has made just two Premier League appearances so far this season, starting against Liverpool on the opening day of the season and coming off the bench against Arsenal last week.

The England international missed a string of matches due to a hamstring problem and then suffered a setback as he neared a return to fitness earlier this month.

Reece James’ Injury History

The full-back is fit enough to be involved and will be on the bench at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime. Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino told a press conference on Friday: ‘No he’s still not ready to start. I think he’s doing well, he was training really well. He’s really close, but at the moment for tomorrow, he’s still going to be on the bench.’

Summer signing Christopher Nkunku is also pushing to return to fitness after a serious knee injury in pre-season has kept him out of the entire campaign so far. On the forward’s return, Pochettino said: ‘Maybe after the international he will be involved. Maybe, but it’s not sure.’

Pochettino’s Plans for the Future

Pochettino remains without Wesley Fofana, Ben Chilwell, Romeo Lavia, Armando Broja and Carney Chukwuemeka, as well as Nkunku, and is keen to get his full squad fit again to continue the improvements they are making.

‘We talk about result and performance and we need to improve we still need to recover our players,’ he said. ‘I think we are building a strong team, the mentality is there. We are Chelsea and we know our responsibility is massive and about winning. I hope yes [to get them there this season]. That is what we want, it will be tough but we will try.’
