Matthijs de Ligt, the talented defender from Bayern Munich, is open to the possibility of leaving the club this summer. Manchester United has reignited their interest in signing him.

Background

De Ligt gained recognition as one of the standout players in Erik ten Hag’s Ajax side that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. He later joined Juventus before moving to Bayern Munich.

Ten Hag, who is now the manager of Manchester United, was reportedly interested in signing De Ligt when he arrived at the club in 2022. However, De Ligt chose to join Bayern instead.

Manchester United’s Interest

Manchester United is currently looking for a new long-term option in defense and has identified De Ligt as a target for the upcoming summer transfer window. Recent reports suggest that De Ligt is unhappy with his current role at Bayern and is considering a move away at the end of the season.

This news has boosted Manchester United’s hopes of signing the talented center-back. De Ligt has only started four league matches this season and is currently third choice behind Dayot Upamecano and Kim min-Jae Thomas Tuchel’s preferred partnership at the back. Bayern’s interest in signing Barcelona star Ronald Araujo could further decrease De Ligt’s chances of regular playing time.

De Ligt is currently one of Bayern’s top earners, but reports suggest that he is likely to leave the club this summer if the right offer comes in. Manchester United is closely monitoring any developments regarding his future.

Tuchel’s Perspective

Despite De Ligt’s limited playing time this season, Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel insists that the Dutchman remains an important part of his long-term plans. Tuchel acknowledges that De Ligt has faced injury issues and believes that he will bounce back stronger.

‘We’re planning with Matthijs, top player and top guy,’ Tuchel said. ‘Matthijs came back injured from the national team, missed all preseason. We played him too early in the Supercup, then he got seriously injured again.’

Conclusion

As the summer transfer window approaches, the possibility of Matthijs de Ligt leaving Bayern Munich and joining Manchester United is becoming more likely. United’s interest in the talented defender, combined with De Ligt’s reported unhappiness at Bayern, could pave the way for a potential move. Fans will eagerly await further developments in this transfer saga.
