Mason Greenwood’s Manchester United career is over after club and player agree to mutually end time at Old Trafford
Mason Greenwood’s Manchester United career is over after the club and the player decided to mutually agree to end his time at Old Trafford. Greenwood has been suspended by the club since January 2022, when allegations were made against him by a female.
Those charges against Greenwood, 21, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped on February 2, 2023. United then conducted an extensive investigation of their own into the incidents, and a verdict was expected before the start of the Premier League campaign in mid-August.
Delayed Decision
That decision was delayed last week, with United denying reports that they had briefed senior figures at the club that Greenwood had been set to return to the first team.
Mutual Agreement
But United have now confirmed that Greenwood’s time at the club is over. ‘Manchester United has concluded its internal investigation into the allegations made against Mason Greenwood,’ a statement read.
‘Our process commenced in February 2023, following all charges against Mason being dropped. Throughout, we have taken into account the wishes, rights and perspective of the alleged victim along with the club’s standards and values, and sought to collate as much information and context as possible.
‘Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged.
Greenwood’s Career at United
Greenwood joined the club at the age of seven, after club scouts spotted him playing for a local team near his home in Bradford. He made his debut for the club at the age of 17, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Solskjaer was so confident of Greenwood’s future at the club that he sold senior striker Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan in 2019, as he wanted to promote the teenager into the first team.
Greenwood made 130 appearances for United, scoring 36 goals.
Conclusion
All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.
