Mark Schwarzer urges Chelsea to keep ‘unsellable’ midfielder.

Date:

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has urged the club not to sell midfielder Mason Mount, who has been linked with Liverpool and Bayern Munich. Mount, a 24-year-old England international, is likely to leave Chelsea after talks between his representatives and the club hit a wall over a contract extension. Chelsea may be forced into selling Mount this summer in order to not break Financial Fair Play rules. Liverpool are strongly linked with a transfer while Bayern Munich, managed by former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, have also entered the race for Mount, with his current deal at Stamford Bridge due to expire in the summer of 2024.

The west London club originally wanted to hand Mount a seven-year deal that would keep him at the club until 2030, but the terms were nowhere close to what he was demanding. Schwarzer has urged the Blues to find a resolution regarding Mount’s future as he told Sky Sports on Wednesday: “He’s almost unsellable. He’s a player you would not sell. He’s a Chelsea kid through and through. He’s been at the club all his life. That’s what fans die for. Fans love that. He’s such an incredible player. I certainly would not be selling him as he is such a phenomenal player.”

Chelsea are looking for at least £50m for Mount, who has been voted the club’s Player of the Year for the last two campaigns. He has made a total of 192 appearances for Chelsea to date, registering 33 goals and 37 assists. Mount has 36 caps for England and is highly rated by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

Mount and Tuchel have a strong relationship having won the Champions League together at Chelsea. But Mount has also been urged to join Liverpool by John Barnes, who feels he would slot nicely into Jurgen Klopp’s team.

In other news, Chelsea legend Mark Schwarzer has urged Todd Boehly to sell two players to fund Joao Felix transfer. Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Paul Merson is baffled by Chelsea’s transfer decision, calling it “bad business”.
