Seattle Mariners Trade Jarred Kelenic to Atlanta Braves

The Seattle Mariners have announced that they have traded outfielder Jarred Kelenic to the Atlanta Braves. In addition to Kelenic, the Braves also received left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales, first baseman Evan White, and cash considerations from the Mariners. Kelenic’s Background and Performance

Jarred Kelenic was selected as the No. 6 pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. He quickly rose through the ranks, playing in multiple levels in 2019 and impressing with his hitting abilities. In fact, he was ranked No. 4 in The Athletic Keith Law’s top prospects for 2021.

During his three MLB seasons with the Mariners, Kelenic posted a .204 batting average, .283 on-base percentage, and .373 slugging percentage. He hit 32 home runs and recorded 109 RBIs in 872 at-bats. In the 2023 season, he contributed 11 homers, 49 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases.

Gonzales’ Performance and Stats

Marco Gonzales, a left-handed pitcher, had a record of 4-1 in the 2023 season with a 5.22 ERA and 34 strikeouts. Throughout his career, he has accumulated a record of 65-49 with a 4.14 ERA and 665 strikeouts in 163 games and 893 innings pitched.

Braves’ Plans for Kelenic

The Braves intend to utilize Kelenic as a left-fielder, competing for the position with Vaughn Grissom. They plan to initially use a platoon system, with Kelenic being a left-handed hitter and Grissom being a right-handed hitter.

Kelenic’s Major League struggles have been a concern, as he hit just .204 with a .656 OPS in 974 plate appearances across 252 games. However, the Braves believe in his potential and hope that a change of scenery will help him reach his full potential.

Impact on Atlanta

The acquisition of Kelenic signifies the end of the Braves’ pursuit of a left-fielder for the upcoming season. They have confidence in the tandem of Kelenic and Grissom, who will bring a mix of youth and talent to the position.
