Marcus Rashford marks recall to England squad for World Cup with goal in Manchester United’s thrilling Carabao Cup win against Aston Villa

Marcus Rashford marked his return to the England squad with a goal for Manchester United in their thrilling Carabao Cup win against Aston Villa.

Just hours after being named in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the World Cup, Rashford equalised for the Red Devils with a finish from close range after capitalising on a slip from Tyrone Mings.

After an uninspiring first half, the contest kicked into life two minutes into the second half with Ollie Watkins putting Unai Emery’s men in front.

The hosts hit back instantly through Anthony Martial’s finish before Villa retook the lead when Diogo Dalot diverted the ball into his own net.

Rashford then got Man United level again with his goal midway through the first half.

“It was like [Rashford] downed tools under Ralf Rangnick…I’m seeing a different Rashford now,” Micky Gray said on commentary for talkSPORT.

“Maybe the one we all saw break onto the scene!”

Erik ten Hag’s men then turned the tie around thanks to a deflected effort from Bruno Fernandes before Scott McTominay sealed the 4-2 win as he got on the end of Alejandro Garnacho’s stunning pass, which was described as ‘Beckham-esque’ by Gray.

And it’s been a good night for Rashford, who had a double dose of good news on Thursday as he prepares to make his first appearance for the national team since the final of Euro 2020.
