Marco Reus Resigns as Captain of Borussia Dortmund

In a shocking turn of events, Borussia Dortmund legend Marco Reus has announced his resignation as captain of the club. The German international, who has skippered the team for the past five years, made the announcement through a video on Twitter. Reus was given the captain’s armband by former manager Lucien Favre in 2018 and led Dortmund to victories in the DFB Pokal and the German Super Cup.

Reus has been a talismanic figure for Dortmund since his arrival in 2011. However, last season saw him spending more time on the bench than on the field, with his role reduced to that of an impact substitute. This change in his playing time seems to have influenced his decision to step down as captain.

In his video announcement, Reus said, “It’s very important for me to tell you something personally: I had a lot of time to think during my vacation and decided to pass on the captain’s armband. I informed Edin Terzic and Sebastian Kehl about this yesterday. I was allowed to wear this armband for five years with pride and honor. Thank you for your support over the years, and I wish Edin and Sebastian that they find a very good successor – I am sure that they will be successful.”

This news comes as a double blow for Dortmund, who recently lost star player Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid in a deal that could rise to £115 million. However, Reus is not expected to leave the club and is entering his 12th season with Dortmund. He has scored 161 goals and provided 121 assists in his 387 appearances for BVB. Reus signed a one-year contract extension in April, which will keep him at the club until next summer.

With Reus stepping down as captain, the question now arises as to who will take on the role. The most likely candidate appears to be 34-year-old Mats Hummels, who previously captained the club before departing for Bayern Munich in 2016. Hummels returned to Dortmund in 2019 and has been a regular presence at the heart of the team’s defense. Other potential successors include Nico Schulz, Niklas Sule, and Marius Wolf.

Despite the change in leadership, Dortmund fans can still look forward to seeing Reus on the field, as he continues to play a vital role in the team. His experience and skill will undoubtedly be an asset as Dortmund aims to challenge for the Bundesliga title once again. Last season, they came close to lifting the trophy but were pipped to the title by Bayern Munich after a 2-2 draw with Mainz on the final day of the season.

As Dortmund prepares for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on the club’s new captain and how they will fill the void left by Reus. It will be interesting to see how the team adapts to this change in leadership and whether it will have any impact on their performance on the field. One thing is for sure, though – Marco Reus will always be remembered as a true legend of Borussia Dortmund.
