Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Marcel Sabitzer will miss the rest of the season after picking up a knee injury. Sabitzer, who joined United in the January transfer window on loan from Bayern Munich, was absent from Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Wolves due to the issue. The 29-year-old Austria international, keen to sign a permanent deal at Old Trafford, has impressed for the Red Devils across his 18 appearances, scoring twice in the Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla and also netting in the FA Cup quarter-final victory against Fulham.
In a statement, United said: ‘Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has suffered a meniscal injury which will, unfortunately, rule him out for the remainder of the season. Everyone at the club is disappointed to lose Marcel’s services, as the Reds chase a strong finish to the season in the Premier League and FA Cup, and we are grateful for his contribution to our progress so far. Christian Eriksen, who was sidelined when Sabitzer arrived, is back playing regularly again, while Raphael Varane made a successful return at the weekend, following his recent lay-off. Alejandro Garnacho scored the clincher late on against Wolves, in his first outing since overcoming an ankle injury. We would like to wish Marcel well in having a speedy recovery.’
Last month, Erik ten Hag praised Sabitzer’s ‘fantastic’ impact on United after the midfielder revealed his desire to remain at the club. Sabitzer, meanwhile, recently told Sky Sports: ‘Here at United, everything is bigger. People are crazy about United. I enjoy being here, I’m very proud!’
