Marcel Desailly issues warning to Chelsea’s record signing Moises Caicedo
Marcel Desailly has fired a warning to Chelsea’s record signing Moises Caicedo following his disastrous debut against West Ham last weekend. Thrust into emergency action with his side trailing 2-1 with half an hour remaining, the £115million man looked ill-prepared given his lack of a pre-season and gave an error strewn performance which culminated in the late foul which allowed Lucas Paqueta to stroke home the winning penalty.
Caicedo sank to his knees at the final whistle and was seen deep in prayer, distraught at having seen his Chelsea career get off to the worst possible start. While his talent is not in question, former Blues skipper Desailly fears the 21-year-old will need a a major shift in attitude if he is to fulfil his potential and meet the demands of playing for a ‘big club’.
Desailly’s Warning
Desailly told Sky Sports: You don’t need to talk about it. We better start to put the mindset into the system , you need to adjust your implication. ‘You are in a big club now! And in a big club you need to prepare yourself much better for each game.
Caicedo’s Apology
Caicedo took to Instagram in the aftermath of the defeat against the Hammers, apologising for his mistakes and vowing to come back stronger.
“But I’m happy to get my first minutes with this big club. We’ll keep working hard to put this team where it deserves. Thanks to the fans who are supporting me.”
Pochettino’s Response
Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino, quizzed about Caicedo conceding the penalty, said: ‘It was a very negative impact to the team. He was telling us he was ready, I think 30 minutes is good for him, many positive things and he is maybe disappointed but we need to move on and he will be a good player for us.
‘I cannot change my speech after Liverpool – we need to believe in the process and we need to keep being calm, and that is the process.’
Conclusion
It remains to be seen how Caicedo will respond to Desailly’s warning, but one thing is for sure – he will have to work hard if he is to live up to his potential and succeed at Chelsea.
