Man United have had to play without talisman Ronaldo who wants to go

Man United v Atletico Madrid: Team news

Cristiano Ronaldo is once again set to be unavailable after he informed United that he wished to leave this summer.

Reports over the weekend claimed that Atletico were stepping up their pursuit of the 37-year-old but Atleti fans reacted by launching an online protest against his signing due to his Real Madrid ties.

Ten Hag has been praised for his handling of the Ronaldo situation even though he ‘probably doesn’t want him at United’.

The former Ajax boss has been laying down his new world order at during the club’s pre-season – including dropping one player from a game over his tardiness.

Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial have been United’s standout performers and look set to be involved once more.

It remains to be seen whether new signings Christian Eriksen or Lisandro Martinez will travel with the squad later this week.

Ten Hag certainly hasn’t been afraid to dish out blunt criticism at his players from the touchline

Man United v Atletico Madrid: What has been said?

Ten Hag sent a warning to his United players to cut out their mistakes before the new Premier League begins.

“In our team it was clear there was a dip,” United boss Ten Hag said. “First-half really good. I think we controlled the game, good football, good change of play.

“We had a lot of movement behind the defending line, made great goals and 2-0 up at half-time. Then a drop of focus. It can be that the guys are tired but it’s never an excuse.

“They have to perform and it is what we didn’t do in the second half. But the first-half really good.

“It was the focus. I don’t want to make excuses about the pitch or weather. No matter what we have to perform.”
