Manchester United have been told they will have to pay £100million to land Benfica star Darwin Nunez this summer.

Erik ten Hag will oversee major changes to the United squad this summer with the Dutchman eager for the club to sign a centre-half, two midfielders and a forward.

22-year-old Nunez is one of the club’s top targets after scoring 34 goals in 41 appearances – including six in the Champions League – with Arsenal and Real Madrid also among the clubs credited with interest.

However, according to The Star, Benfica have told United they must pay £100million to bring him to Old Trafford – a move that would make him British football’s most expensive signing alongside Jack Grealish.

United are not willing to meet those demands but will not walk away from the deal and have told Benfica to come up with a more realistic price.

United are determined not to be held to ransom but will move onto other targets unless the Portuguese side lower their demands.

United are exploring other options with reports in Germany claiming United will launch an offer to sign RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku next week after the forward was recommended to the club by Ralf Rangnick.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Nkunku’s representatives are already in contact with United with ten Hag backing the move.

RB Leipzig are reluctant to cash in this summer and could offer the France international a new contract that includes the incentive of a buyout clause, keeping him at the club for at least another year.

Nkunku however is said to be ‘hesitant’ over penning fresh terms with the German side.
