Incoming manager Erik ten Hag will need to make serious changes to the squad, with interim boss Ralf Rangnick admitted the club needs ‘open heart surgery’.

It appears that a first signing could soon be through the door with De Jong firmly on United’s radar.

Barcelona would want to recoup at least the £65m they paid for de Jong in 2019 and tentative talks with United have begun.

The Netherlands international has remained a first-team regular under both Ronald Koeman and Xavi, making 45 appearances in total this season.

Ten Hag will already be very familiar with De Jong, having worked together at Ajax before the latter joined Barcelona in 2019.

He was part of that side who made it all the way to the Champions League semi-final, before losing to Tottenham.

Speaking to UEFA after the midfielder joined the LaLiga club, Ten Hag said: “He is always calm and always has the solution. He scans so well that he always knows how to go forward.

“You can hardly put him under pressure – that is such a great gift.”
