Manchester United have made another signing in their busy summer transfer window, bringing in midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris St-Germain. The 23-year-old Uruguayan international has agreed to a five-year contract with the option to extend it for an additional 12 months. The initial fee for Ugarte is £42.1m, with the potential for an additional £8.4m in payments. This brings United’s overall spending to just over £190m for the summer.
Ugarte made 37 appearances for PSG last season, helping them win the Ligue 1 title. He joined the French club from Sporting Lisbon for a reported fee of £50.5m. It is understood that PSG has negotiated a 10% sell-on clause for Ugarte, which both clubs are satisfied with.
Upon signing for Manchester United, Ugarte expressed his excitement to join such a prestigious club. He admires United and their ambitious nature, and he is eager to experience playing at Old Trafford. Ugarte is a determined player who is willing to sacrifice everything for his team’s success. He believes that together with his teammates, they can win trophies and bring the club back to its former glory.
United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, praised Ugarte’s qualities as one of the best ball-winning midfielders in the world. He believes Ugarte’s experience and passion will be a great addition to the team’s strong group of midfielders.
The announcement of Ugarte’s signing came shortly after the departure of Scott McTominay, who joined Napoli. United received a fee of £25.7m for the Scotland international and have a 10% sell-on clause in his contract. McTominay, an academy graduate, made 255 appearances for United, scoring 29 goals.
In addition to Ugarte, United also confirmed the arrival of 18-year-old Mali youth midfielder Sekou Kone from Guidars for a fee believed to be around £1m. Since Erik ten Hag took over as manager in 2022, United has spent nearly £600m on new players. Ugarte joins Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui as this summer’s signings.
With the sale of McTominay, United has recouped over £85m this summer. The club’s active transfer window showcases their determination to strengthen the squad and compete at the highest level.
