Manchester United Set to Hijack Bayern Munich’s Move for Xavi Simons

Date:

Manchester United are reportedly planning a double transfer swoop, with their sights set on 21-year-old midfielder Xavi Simons. Simons, currently contracted to Paris Saint-Germain, impressed during his loan spell at RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga last season. This has garnered interest from several clubs, including Bayern Munich, who were thought to have secured his signature. However, United are hopeful that they can hijack the move and bring Simons to Old Trafford.

United manager Erik ten Hag is said to be a big admirer of Simons and believes his versatility would make him a valuable addition to the squad. Negotiating a fee with PSG could prove to be challenging, though. The French club rejected a £42 million offer for Simons last year and now believe his value has skyrocketed after his impressive performances at Euro 2024. Despite these obstacles, United seems undeterred and are keen to secure Simons’ services, especially considering their ongoing negotiations with PSG for 23-year-old Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

The potential deal for Ugarte indicates that PSG is willing to engage in further business with United. The two clubs are currently working on a £60 million deal to bring Ugarte to Old Trafford from Parc des Princes. This could give United an advantage in their pursuit of Simons. Additionally, United may have another trick up their sleeve in the form of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who recently joined Ten Hag’s backroom team. Simons spent the 2022/23 season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, where he played under Van Nistelrooy’s guidance. The relationship between the two could potentially sway Simons’ decision in favor of United.

In other transfer news, United recently confirmed the signing of 18-year-old center-back Leny Yoro from Lille. Yoro completed his medical after the clubs agreed on a £52 million deal, and he signed a five-year contract. Yoro shares the same agent, Jorge Mendes, with Ugarte. This connection could further strengthen United’s position in negotiations.

Overall, Manchester United’s reported pursuit of Xavi Simons demonstrates their ambition to strengthen their squad with talented young players. While securing a deal with PSG may prove challenging, the potential involvement of Ten Hag and Van Nistelrooy, as well as their ongoing negotiations for Ugarte, could give United an advantage in their pursuit of Simons.
