Manchester United Player Absent from Training Due to Illness Before Brentford Match
Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo was unable to attend first-team training on Thursday due to illness, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming match against Brentford. The 18-year-old academy product has been a standout performer for United this season, shining amidst the team’s disappointing campaign that has left them in sixth place in the Premier League table.
Mainoo’s recent success led to his inclusion in the England squad for the Euro 2024 warm-up matches against Brazil and Belgium. Although he initially missed out on Gareth Southgate’s 25-man squad, the teenager was later promoted from the Under-21s and earned his first two senior caps. In his debut performance against Belgium, Mainoo impressed and was awarded the man-of-the-match title.
Prior to the international break, Mainoo started in three consecutive matches for Manchester United, including fixtures against Manchester City, Everton, and Liverpool. It was expected that he would continue his run in the side for the upcoming game against Brentford. However, Samuel Luckhurst of The Manchester Evening News reported that Mainoo fell ill earlier in the week and was unable to participate in Thursday’s training session.
Despite missing training, Mainoo did report to Carrington on Friday, giving hope to manager Erik ten Hag that he could still be utilized in the match against Brentford. The young midfielder has made 14 appearances in the Premier League this season and played a crucial role in United’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Wolves last month, scoring a last-gasp goal.
Ten Hag spoke to the media ahead of the Brentford trip and emphasized the importance of keeping Mainoo grounded despite his rapid rise to prominence. The manager praised Mainoo’s dedication to the game and his desire to win and improve every day. He expressed confidence in Mainoo’s ability to handle the situation but assured that the coaching staff would intervene if necessary.
Ten Hag also commended Mainoo’s character both on and off the pitch, stating that he was not surprised by the midfielder’s quick adaptation to international football. He highlighted Mainoo’s natural talent and praised the Manchester United academy for producing such a promising young player. Ten Hag expressed his pride in Mainoo’s achievements and credited the entire club for their contribution to his development.
In addition to Mainoo’s potential absence, there is hope that Lisandro Martinez will return to the squad after an eight-week absence due to a medial collateral ligament injury. Ten Hag acknowledged Martinez’s impact on the team, noting his composure, calmness, and winning attitude. The defender’s presence would undoubtedly contribute to United’s performance.
As Manchester United prepares to face Brentford, the outcome of the match remains uncertain with the absence of Mainoo and the potential return of Martinez. Fans will be eagerly waiting to see if these key players will be able to make an impact and help the team secure a crucial victory.
