Manchester United are planning a £25million bid for Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos in January.

21-year-old Ramos was on the radar of both Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United while Southampton were understood to have made a club record offer to sign the Portugal international.

Following the departure of Darwin Nunez, who joined Liverpool for £85million, Ramos has made a fine start to filling that void up front, having scored eight times in 12 games, also laying on five assists.

That form has attracted interest from Old Trafford, according to The Sun, with United officials now making contact with the player’s representatives.

The report claims Benfica value Ramos at £25m, a fee United are unlikely to go beyond after their summer spending which totalled over £200m.

However, there is an acceptance at United that another forward option is required after United failed to bring in another centre forward in the summer.

Anthony Martial was set to occupy the leading role up front after an impressive pre-season but hamstring and achilles injuries have limited him to just 45 minutes of action.

Marcus Rashford has been tasked with leading the line in place, scoring three times so far this season but he too has also picked up a knock, leaving 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo as their only recognised option up front.

United take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium following the international break when they hope to have Rashford available once again. A timeline for Martial’s return however is still not clear, with ESPN reporting United are exercising caution over the Frenchman.

United are eager to give the striker as much time as possible to recover from his latest achilles injury, aware how problematic the issue can become if not given enough time to heal properly.

Martial faces a fight to reclaim a spot in the French national team ahead of this winter’s World Cup with Rashford, who missed out on a call-up for upcoming England games because of that injury, hopeful his form can also earn him a call up for Qatar.

‘There were certain players we wanted to keep involved this time, but that said it doesn’t mean that this is the end for some of the others who aren’t involved,’ England boss Gareth Southgate said last week.

‘Marcus Rashford, for example, has shown some encouraging signs recently. He is a player we know well so if he can perform at a high level in the next few weeks, he of course will be under consideration.’
