Manchester United is reportedly willing to listen to offers for most of their first-team squad this summer as the club looks to rebuild and challenge for major honors. While there are rumors that Marcus Rashford is on the list, the club is said to prefer keeping the England striker and working with him to regain his form from last season. Paris St-Germain has been linked with Rashford in the past, but sources have distanced the club from a move for him.
Manager Erik ten Hag’s regular starters, Rasmus Hojlund, Kobbie Mainoo, and Alejandro Garnacho, are believed to be exempt from potential sales. It would take a significant offer for United to even consider selling captain Bruno Fernandes, goalkeeper Andre Onana, and full-back Diogo Dalot, who signed a new long-term deal less than a year ago.
However, it remains uncertain how much business United will actually do, as the level of interest in their players and the fees they might command are unknown. The club has struggled to sell players in the past, with Daniel James’ move to Leeds United in 2021 being the last time they raised a significant amount for a player.
The current Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) mean that United must be cautious about their spending, especially as they are likely to miss out on Champions League qualification. To qualify for the Europa League, they will need to either finish sixth in the Premier League or win the FA Cup final against Manchester City. The club currently sits in sixth place, one point ahead of Newcastle.
United will also aim to generate significant fees in the transfer market. Some experienced players, including Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane, will leave as their contracts have expired. Sofyan Amrabat is expected to return to Fiorentina after a difficult loan spell, while midfielders Christian Eriksen and Casemiro have had disappointing campaigns and have one and two years left on their contracts, respectively.
While United was willing to sell Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay last summer, the club is unlikely to stand in their way if the right deal comes along. Midfielders Donny van de Beek and Hannibal Mejbri are currently on loan at other clubs.
It is expected that Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho will also leave. Greenwood’s sale would be considered profitable under the PSR as he is a homegrown player. Sancho, who had a social media outburst in September, has not apologized to Ten Hag and is currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
Ten Hag’s future at United is also uncertain, with potential interest from Ajax for a return to the Dutch club. If United decides to keep Ten Hag, they will need to consider offering him a contract extension as his current deal expires in 2025.
Sources at United have suggested that it may not be until the 2025-26 season that the club is able to truly compete at the highest level again.
