Glazers ‘not appropriate’ to attend Manchester United Fans’ Forum
Manchester United have released a statement saying that it would not have been appropriate for the Glazers to attend the Fans’ Forum last week. The statement comes following the collapse of the European Super League proposal in 2021 and the American owners’ vow to have an open dialogue with supporters.
European Super League Proposal
The European Super League proposal was met with widespread criticism from fans, players, and managers alike. The proposal was for a breakaway league consisting of 12 of Europe’s top clubs, including Manchester United. The proposal was eventually scrapped after a huge backlash from fans and the footballing community.
Open Dialogue with Supporters
Following the collapse of the proposal, the American owners vowed to have an open dialogue with supporters. Joel Glazer, the club’s co-chairman, spoke to supporters at a Fans’ Forum in 2021. However, he – nor any other member of the family – has failed to turn up since. That included a Forum with supporters last week, when fans were desperate to question the American owners on the future of the club.
Fans’ Forum Last Week
The Forum was held before news of Sheikh Jassim’s withdrawl, as well as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s move to take a 25% minority stake at Old Trafford. However, Manchester United said it would ‘not have been appropriate’ for the Glazers to turn up, given they are not able to address the takeover.
A statement said: “Following the start of that process there are tight legal and regulatory restrictions on what we can say about the strategic review. It would not be appropriate or productive for the owners to participate in these meetings when they are not able to talk about the main issue that fan representatives would naturally wish to question them on.”
Conclusion
Manchester United fans have been desperate for answers from the Glazers since their takeover of the club in 2021. However, it appears that they will have to wait a little longer for those answers, as the club has said that it would not be appropriate for them to attend the Fans’ Forum last week.
