Manchester United down Newcastle for first trophy in six years as Casemiro and Marcus Rashford show the Erik ten Hag revolution is in full effect

The Erik ten Hag revolution is in full effect, with Manchester United easing to their first trophy in almost six years.

A 2-0 win over Newcastle at Wembley ended an uncharacteristically long baron spell for the Premier League giants, and it came just seven months into their new manager’s tenure.

There were all the hallmarks of what’s made the Dutchman’s United so good, with new signings excelling, and improved English talent showing their best.

The two assets combined in the 33rd minute when Luke Shaw guided in a perfect cross for Casemiro to head in, showing just how incredible the former Real Madrid man has been.

Many questioned his £60million signing, but he now has a record of 17 wins in 20 career finals, with three goals and an assist.

Newcastle had started well, but the game was against them as soon as the star Brazilian found the net.

Just six minutes later it was two when Ten Hag again proved the doubters wrong as he watched his much-maligned emergency striker signing of Wout Weghorst provide the goods.

Winning the ball and charging at the Magpies defence, he found Marcus Rashford in the box, and his shot deflected off Sven Botman, over Loris Karius, and into the back of the net.

The result leaves an expectant Newcastle without a domestic trophy win in 68 years, nor silverware in any competition since 2007.

There are still plenty of signs the new-monied upstarts are on their way to the top, but 90 minutes at Wembley showed that United are one of a number of giants who will be blocking their path.
