Eric Ramsay, the assistant coach of Manchester United, has signed a contract to become the manager of Major League Soccer (MLS) club Minnesota United. The previous manager of Minnesota United, Adrian Heath, was dismissed in October, leaving the team without a permanent manager. Talks with Ramsay have been progressing rapidly over the past few days. While interim managers Sean McCauley and Cameron Knowles have been leading the team, Knowles will be in charge for their upcoming match against Austin FC.
According to ESPN, Ramsay, who is 32 years old, signed the deal on Thursday. However, his start date is yet to be determined as the final details of his visa paperwork are being sorted out. It is reported that Ramsay will continue to work with Manchester United and Erik ten Hag for the next three games, including the highly anticipated derby against Manchester City on March 3.
Ramsay joined Manchester United at the age of 29 in 2021 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the manager. He is considered one of the top young coaches in English football. Prior to joining Manchester United, Ramsay worked as a youth coach at Swansea City and spent two years at Chelsea’s academy. He also had a brief stint coaching with the Wales national team alongside Rob Page.
Before embarking on his coaching career, Ramsay played for Welshpool Town in the Cymru Premier, making 14 appearances. However, he made the decision to prioritize coaching and went on to graduate from Loughborough University. He worked as an assistant coach for the university team under Kieran McKenna, who is now the manager of Ipswich Town.
Last year, Ramsay was approached by Blackpool Town to become their permanent manager but chose to remain at Manchester United to continue working with Ten Hag and coaches Mitchell van der Gaag, Steve McClaren, and Benni McCarthy. When Ramsay left Chelsea to join United as a set-pieces and one-to-one specialist three years ago, Solskjaer praised his abilities, describing him as a young, fresh, and innovative coach.
It will be interesting to see how Ramsay’s managerial career develops at Minnesota United. With his experience and expertise, he could bring a new dynamic to the team and help them achieve success in the MLS. Fans of both Manchester United and Minnesota United will be eagerly watching his progress as he takes on this new challenge.
