Jadon Sancho’s time at Manchester United appears to be coming to an end, as the club has agreed to sell him to Premier League rivals Chelsea. The winger was signed by United for £73m in 2021 but failed to live up to expectations during his time at Old Trafford. After two disappointing seasons and a falling out with manager Erik ten Hag, Sancho was loaned back to Borussia Dortmund last season, where he seemed to regain his form and even played in the Champions League final.
Despite ten Hag’s claims that he was willing to reintegrate Sancho into the squad for the upcoming season, it became clear that the winger was not in United’s plans. He was left out of the squad for the first two games of the new season, raising doubts about his future at the club. This caught the attention of Chelsea, who expressed interest in signing Sancho in exchange for Raheem Sterling, a player deemed surplus to requirements by Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca.
Sterling was open to joining United, which would have increased Chelsea’s chances of securing Sancho’s signature. However, United has now reached an agreement with Serie A giants Juventus for Sancho’s transfer. According to RMC Sport, Sancho will join Juventus on loan for the current season before completing a permanent move next summer. He will have the opportunity to play under Thiago Motta, the current manager of Juventus, who are currently leading Serie A after two games.
The potential move surprised many Chelsea fans, but former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel expressed his support for the deal. Mikel, who won numerous titles during his time at Chelsea, praised Sancho as a fantastic player and said he would be happy to see him at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, ten Hag stated that Sancho would have to compete for his place in the team, as he omitted him from the matchday squad to face Brighton. He emphasized the need for a full squad and competition in every position throughout the long season.
If the transfer goes through, Sancho will end his Manchester United career with 83 appearances and 12 goals. It remains to be seen how he will perform at Juventus and whether he can fulfill his potential at the Italian club.
