Mason Greenwood Could Rebuild His Career in Italy
Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood could be sent on loan to Serie A side Atalanta as part of a deal to bring Rasmus Hojlund to Old Trafford, according to reports. The Red Devils are looking into the possibility of sending Greenwood the other way on loan to bring Hojlund’s price down, as the 20-year-old has been identified as United’s first choice in their hunt for a new striker.
Greenwood remains suspended by Manchester United as they conduct an internal investigation following his arrest in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault, despite the Crown Prosecution Service dropping the charges in February. The result of that investigation is yet to be decided, but a loan to a European club could be an option for the player who still has two years left on his Manchester United contract.
Atalanta are thought to be interested in the suggestion, but there is still plenty of negotiation to be done over how much the loan would knock off Hojlund’s asking price and even if it is genuinely feasible given the investigation is not at an end.
Hojlund scored nine Serie A goals last season in his first campaign in Italy, joining Atalanta from Sturm Graz in Austria last year. The youngster has made a blistering start to his international career, scoring six goals in his first six games for Denmark and has caught the eye of scouts from Old Trafford.
If a loan move does go ahead, it could be a great opportunity for Greenwood to rebuild his career and prove his worth on the pitch. The 19-year-old has shown glimpses of his potential since breaking into the Manchester United first team in 2018, but has struggled to find consistent form and has been hampered by off-field issues.
A move to Italy could provide Greenwood with the chance to get back to his best and show what he can do on the pitch. The Serie A is renowned for its defensive style of play, which could help Greenwood hone his skills and develop into a top-class striker.
Atalanta have already shown their willingness to take a chance on young players, with Hojlund being an example of this. The 20-year-old has already made a big impact in Italy and if Greenwood can replicate that success then it could be a great move for both parties.
It remains to be seen if Manchester United and Atalanta can agree on a deal, but if they do then it could be the perfect opportunity for Mason Greenwood to begin rebuilding his career in Italy.
