Man Utd Win Late Again in WSL

Manchester United are looking more and more like potential Women’s Super League champions, having secured a dramatic victory at Aston Villa that puts them six points clear at the top of the WSL. Despite Villa hitting the bar twice and Rachel Daly’s double, United found a way to win thanks to their manager Marc Skinner’s substitutions and Millie Turner’s late winner. Skinner went through every conceivable emotion during the game, from dejection to anger to pure joy. His triple substitution on 77 minutes and bringing on Turner for Aoife Mannion in the final throes proved a masterstroke, and Fern Whelan noted that ‘That’s how titles are won in leagues like this.’ Toone and Russo, England heroes, were on the bench while it was another United academy product in Turner who stepped up to save the day. Wilko told her ‘Mil, go and win us the game’ and she did just that. While this was a sickening loss for Villa, victory for United should be welcomed by the neutral for ensuring the WSL title race remains beautifully poised. City, Chelsea and Arsenal all have games in hand on United, but United have their work done while the others play catch-up. Chelsea have a good run-in, but United are in the better position as the points are on the board. It looks like 21 May – when Chelsea host Arsenal and City visit United – could be the day of destiny for the four title hopefuls. Chelsea do have the advantage of experience, but United, formed only five years ago, have momentum and are seeking a maiden WSL crown as well as a domestic double.
