Marcus Rashford earned himself a place in the UEFA Europa League Team of the Season after scoring six goals in the competition this campaign. The Red Devils reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League, losing out to eventual champions Sevilla 5-2 on aggregate. Rashford was a key part of that run, scoring six times, including at the Camp Nou against Barcelona and in both legs of the round of 16 victory over Real Betis. His six goals were enough to see him finish as joint top-scorer alongside Union Saint-Gilloise’s Victor Boniface, who also makes the select XI. Unsurprisingly Sevilla are well represented in the Team of the Season, as are runners-up Roma, who boast two former Manchester United players in the XI. Chris Smalling and Nemanja Matic have made it into UEFA’s team as Roma beat the likes of Real Sociedad, Feyenoord and Bayer Leverkusen before losing to Sevilla on penalties in Budapest. Boniface, Rashford and Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah were the only three players outside of the finalists to make it into the Team of the Season.
Rashford’s six goals in the Europa League were part of his best goal-scoring season to date, with the 25-year-old scoring 30 times in all competitions. His previous best was the 22 goals he scored in 2019-20 so it has been a significant improvement for the England star under Erik ten Hag, especially after his low point in the previous campaign when he netted just five times.
