Manager Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United can attract “quality players” this summer despite the uncertainty surrounding the club’s ownership. Ten Hag said there was a big difference from last year when he took charge, as many players now see the project, dynamic and ambition of the club. Last summer, United signed midfielder Casemiro from Real Madrid for £70m, as well as midfielder Christian Eriksen, forward Antony, and defenders Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia. Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo was linked with a move from PSV Eindhoven in December before joining Liverpool. Ten Hag said that last year there were a lot of reservations and doubts when they approached players, but this year many quality players really want to come. The two main parties looking to take control of United are Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group, however the Glazer family have yet to name a preferred bidder.
United won the Carabao Cup in February and face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on 3 June. They are currently fourth in the Premier League, which would secure Champions League football next season, although Liverpool are only a point behind with three matches remaining. Ten Hag said they can take confidence and belief from having beaten the best teams in the world, but it will be a test of courage to finish the season in the right position.
Goalkeeper David de Gea is in talks over a new contract, although there have been reports that he may not be first choice next season. The 32-year-old has been criticised this season, most recently after his error proved decisive in the 1-0 league defeat by West Ham last weekend. Ten Hag said uncertainty over De Gea’s future was not behind his loss of form, as every top football player has a high demand to perform. He believes there could be a thousand and one reasons for De Gea’s loss of form, but does not think it is due to his contract situation.
