Manchester United Eyeing AC Milan’s Mike Maignan Amid Contract Rejection Rumors
Manchester United is reportedly considering a move for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who is rumored to be rejecting a new contract offer. Last summer, the Red Devils spent £47m to bring Andre Onana from Inter Milan to Old Trafford as their new No.1.
However, Onana has made several high-profile errors, including his Champions League nightmare at Galatasaray last week. As a result, manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly searching for a new goalkeeper, with Maignan being one of the potential candidates.
Recent reports from Corriere della Sera have further fueled speculation about Maignan’s future. The 28-year-old French international signed a five-year contract with Milan when he joined from Lille in 2021.
Contract Negotiations Stalled Over Wage Demands
Although talks have been held to extend Maignan’s contract, they have hit a roadblock due to his wage demands. Maignan and his representatives are seeking a salary of around £6.85m per year, a figure that Milan claims they cannot afford.
If a suitable offer arrives during the January transfer window, Milan may decide to cash in on Maignan, as he is expected to reject the club’s latest contract offer.
Manchester United is not the only European heavyweight linked with the goalkeeper. Bayern Munich is reportedly interested in making him the long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer, while Chelsea also inquired about his availability during the summer.
Despite the contract stand-off, Maignan has made 16 appearances in all competitions this season, keeping seven clean sheets.
