Manchester United hopeful of Tyrell Malacia return before end of year
Manchester United hope to have Tyrell Malacia available again before the end of the year with the left-back recovering from knee surgery. The Netherlands international, who joined United from Feyenoord in the summer of 2022, has not played since United’s final game of last season against Fulham.
He missed the club’s entire pre-season campaign with no update given on his condition since the start of the campaign. ‘Malacia’s will take some time, the same as Amad and Kobbie, they are really impact injuries,’ Erik ten Hag noted ahead of the first game of the season against Wolves with no other updates forthcoming.
Malacia’s Knee Surgery
The Manchester Evening News report Malacia has been sidelined having been forced to undergo an operation on an injury believed to have been suffered last season. While the problem was initially looked to be managed with pain injections, the 22-year-old eventually underwent surgery. Malacia spent some times in crutches before returning to Netherlands as part of his recovery.
Injury Woes
United also lost first-choice left-back Luke Shaw to injury in September with the England international expected to return next month having missed the last eight games. With Shaw and Malacia out, United signed Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham on the final day of the summer transfer window. The Spaniard however has also been struck by injury, missing United’s last four games leading into the international break after impressing in his early showings.
Return Date Unknown
The situation left United with no recognised left-backs with summer signing Sofyan Amrabat having to fill in at full-back. United hope to have Reguilon available again when they take on Sheffield United on Saturday night. Like Malacia and fellow youngster Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo is another still play this season. The midfielder starred in the pre-season tour of the US where he suffered an ankle injury.
He returned to training earlier this month ahead of the Champions League defeat to Galatasaray. United planned a behind-closed-doors friendly against Barnsley during the international break, with Ten Hag hopeful that Mainoo could feature alongside Reguilon and Raphael Varane. However, United staff eventually decided the game would come too soon for Mainoo with his return date pushed back as a result.
At this stage, it is unclear when Malacia will be available for selection again, but United are hopeful he will be back in action before the end of the year. With Shaw and Reguilon both expected back soon, United’s left-back options should be bolstered in the coming weeks.
