Scott McTominay, the 26-year-old midfielder for Manchester United, has reportedly been told by the club that he can leave in the summer if Newcastle United is willing to pay £50 million for him. McTominay has struggled to secure a regular starting spot under Erik ten Hag, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen preferred as the central midfield pairing when both are available. McTominay has stepped in to deputise in their absence, but with the pair now ready for selection, he may find himself back on the bench, which could see him seek a transfer should he fall down the pecking order.
The Daily Star has reported that Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is a huge admirer of McTominay and has identified him as an ideal addition to his squad at the end of the campaign. McTominay has been in great form of late, having banged in four goals during the international break. He scored doubles in the Euro 2024 qualifying wins against Cyprus and Spain before breaking the deadlock in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Everton.
Jermaine Pennant has advised McTominay to seek a move away in the summer, naming Newcastle and West Ham as two possible options. Speaking on The Sports Bar last month, the ex-Arsenal and Liverpool winger said: “I would say go for a Newcastle, maybe West Ham. If Declan Rice leaves in the summer, I think that will be a great purchase, a great addition for West Ham. They’re similar kind of players.”
McTominay is tied down at the Theatre of Dreams until 2025, but United won’t stand in the way of the player moving on if Newcastle is willing to pay £50 million for their academy graduate.
