Former Liverpool Sporting Director Julian Ward in Contention for Manchester United Role
Former Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward has emerged as a surprise candidate for the sporting director role at Manchester United. The position has become vacant after Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 25% stake in the club and took control of football operations.
Other contenders for the role include Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth and Dougie Freeman of Crystal Palace, as reported by The Telegraph. However, Ward’s experience and success at Liverpool make him a strong candidate.
Ward’s Impressive Career at Liverpool
In his 11 years at Liverpool, Ward held various positions, starting as the European scouting manager for Spain and Portugal. He was later promoted to assistant sporting director and eventually took over as the sporting director following Michael Edwards’ departure.
During his tenure, Ward played a crucial role in the club’s signings, including Luis Diaz and Darin Nunez. His decision to leave Anfield at the end of last season surprised many, but he has since been in no rush to return to football.
Ashworth Remains Ratcliffe’s Top Choice
Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth is reportedly Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s preferred choice for the sporting director role. Ashworth has been the sporting director at Newcastle since joining over a year ago and has made significant contributions to the club’s development.
However, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe believes that Ashworth remains committed to the project at Newcastle and expects him to stay in his current role.
Changes at Manchester United
As part of the changes at Manchester United, John Murtough, who has been the football director in 2021, is unlikely to retain his current role. However, there is a possibility that he may be offered a different position within the club.
With the appointment of a new sporting director, Manchester United aims to overhaul its recruitment department and strengthen its football operations.
