Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has confirmed that he will not be representing Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations. Diallo, who made his first appearance of the season off the bench against Nottingham Forest, has recovered from a knee injury suffered during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States. Despite being capped by his country in 2021 and making four appearances for the Ivory Coast, Diallo was not named in the final squad for the competition. Various media outlets had reported that Diallo would be on international duty, but the player himself has denied these reports on social media.
Diallo had a successful loan spell at Sunderland last season and now hopes to impress Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. He came on as a substitute in the team’s recent defeat against Forest and caught the attention of ten Hag, who praised his performance. Diallo will be looking to challenge Antony for a place in the first team, starting with the upcoming FA Cup match against Wigan Athletic.
While Diallo will remain in Manchester, Andre Onana will be representing Cameroon at AFCON. Manchester United is currently in talks with Cameroon to delay Onana’s departure until after their Premier League meeting with Tottenham on January 14th. Cameroon’s campaign begins the following day against Guinea.
