Alternative Goalkeeper Options for Manchester United
Manchester United have been forced to consider cheaper alternatives as they are unable to sanction a £50million move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana. Manager Erik ten Hag had identified the 27-year-old as the perfect replacement for David De Gea, who is a free agent after his contract with the club expired on Friday.
Inter Milan Asking Price
Though United remain in talks with De Gea, Ten Hag is keen to sign a new number 1 that is comfortable with the ball at his feet. Onana is keen on a move to Old Trafford and Inter are willing to sell, provided United match their asking price of around £50m. But, having agreed a £60m move to sign Mason Mount, United are walking a Financial Fair Play tightrope and Ten Hag has a budget of around £120m this summer.
Cheaper Alternatives
Without significant departures, Ten Hag will be forced to choose between Onana and a £60m-rated striker and the Dutchman feels a forward is the more pressing concern. United are therefore looking at cheaper alternatives to Onana, with Frankfurt stopper Kevin Trapp in the frame. The Athletic claim United have made contact with Feyenoord over a move for Justin Bijlow but the Dutch giants are unwilling to sell.
Conclusion
With no significant departures and a limited budget, Ten Hag will have to make some tough decisions this summer. He will have to decide whether to go all out for Onana or settle for a cheaper alternative. Either way, it looks like United will be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.
