Jonny Evans Set to Receive One-Year Contract Extension at Manchester United

Manchester United are set to hand veteran centre-back Jonny Evans a one-year deal, according to reports. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman has impressed Erik ten Hag after returning to United on a short-term deal with some stellar pre-season performances.

Evans’ contract is only valid until the start of the 2023-24 campaign, meaning Ten Hag must make a call on whether or not to keep him on for the new season. According to the Belfast Telegraph, Dutch boss Ten Hag had now made a decision and United are set to give Evans a one-year contract.

Evans was released by Leicester City this summer following their shock relegation from the Premier League last season. He came through United’s academy and made 198 appearances for the club between 2006 and 2015 before moving to West Brom and then Leicester, where he has spent last five years before making his return as a Red Devil.

Erik Ten Hag Praises Jonny Evans

‘I think he [Evans] helped us, as you said, [with] younger players, but also for numbers here,’ Ten Hag said about Evans last week. ‘Not all the internationals were in and we had to manage the load from the players so that was really useful. Jonny wants to stay fit, he still wants a career. I think he played a very good game against Lyon and you could see how he was mentoring the younger players. I think he was pushing the younger players to a higher level and that can be really helpful.’

Jonny Evans’ Career at Manchester United

Evans is a product of Manchester United’s youth academy, having joined the club in 2002. He made his first team debut in 2006 and went on to make 198 appearances for the club before leaving in 2015. During his time at Old Trafford, Evans won three Premier League titles, three League Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup.

Since leaving United, Evans has gone on to play for West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City. He has been an integral part of both teams, helping them achieve success in the Premier League and other competitions. Now, it looks like he will be returning to Old Trafford for one more season.

Conclusion

Jonny Evans is set to receive a one-year contract extension at Manchester United after impressing in pre-season. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman has been an integral part of United’s youth academy and first team over the years, winning multiple titles and trophies during his time at Old Trafford. He has also been an important player for West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City since leaving United in 2015. Now, it looks like he will be returning to Old Trafford for one more season.
