David De Gea’s future with Manchester United remains uncertain after the goalkeeper came in for criticism following the Red Devils’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday. Ilkay Gundogan’s second goal of the game was not well struck, but still found the back of the net, leading to questions about De Gea’s shot-stopping ability.
The 32-year-old’s current contract is set to expire this summer, although the club has the option to extend it by a further year. Terms had been agreed on a new deal to keep him at Old Trafford beyond next year, but the Daily Mail report that the contract is yet to be signed off by the club and the Wembley error could still have consequences. Even if the contract offer remains in place, De Gea may have to accept that he will not be first choice next season, with Manchester United looking to buy a new starting goalkeeper to replace him.
Manager Erik ten Hag has defended De Gea, saying he had a fantastic season, but admitted that there were issues that he wants the club to deal with. Who would replace De Gea is not entirely clear, though, with Porto goalkeeper Diogo Carlos linked but saying that he is very happy where he is.
It remains to be seen what will happen with De Gea’s future, but it is clear that Manchester United are looking to bring in a new goalkeeper who is more adept at playing out from the back. For more news and updates on this story, check Metro Sport’s sport page on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
